The
team (fr.L.: Barbara Bond, EdD; Jing Tan, PhD; Stephen Lau, MD; Andrea Talis, PhD; Betty Yau, MBA)  "Three
years ago, we undertook a study to examine cancer attitudes and experience in the Boston Chinese American Community. The
project was undertaken based on the interest of present and past employees of Tufts MC. ... Every ethnic community has
special features that make it unique. For many, the health issues raised by the dichotomy between Western Medicine and Eastern
Traditional Medicine have become compelling in the setting of delivering health care in the West to individuals immigrating
from the Eastern cultures. ... The end-behavioral response of Chinese Americans may be the same (eg. avoidance of screening
procedures or of doctors in general) as individuals from other cultures but the underlying attitudes that cause
the behavior are unique and must be understood to be targeted appropriately for the successful delivery of health care in
Chinese-American Communities."
