Cancer Concerns in the Chinese Community
Update:
Eight focus groups and four transcripts were completed in Aug 2008. A data analysis
team of 5 people has been formed: (Hanh La, PhD, Steve Lau, MD, Barbara Bond, EdD, Andrea Talis, PhD
and Betty Yau)
240 questionnaires were collected. All data were entered into the spreadsheets created by
one of our volunteers, JianHua Shang. We also got support from the DDRC (Design & Data Resource Ctr.) of
the Tufts Medical Center to help us clean and eventually analyze the data. Isi Obandan of DDRC will be working with us.

Hepatology clinic: - Alternative plans
have been brainstormed. - The ENT Clinic of the Tufts Medical Center had asked us for support for a FREE Nasopharyngeal cancer screening
event to be held in November.
Volunteers for the event will be needed.

cancer priorities in the Chinese community.

Requirements: * a genuine interest to volunteer & to help others * responsible
and reliable * native speaker of either Cantonese, Mandarin and/or Toisanese
* able to read and write Chinese
* NO Enlgish skill nor voice over experience is required.

The Chinese transcript, diections to WUMB and other logistics will be sent out later. A schedule
for all voice over participants will be posted on-line as soon so it is worked out. So everyone will be clear of
who will be responsible of what lines/roles.

Our goal is to deliver cancer services that correspond to community needs. This project's goal is to learn more about
cancer priorities in the Chinese community.
The Steering Committee has
developed a draft questionnaire that includes two parts. The first part is a one-page "sign up" screening form
for participants in future focus groups on cancer. The rest is a questionnaire with 4 objectives:
1. demographics
2. personal experience with
cancer illness in family and friends
3. cancer screening
experience
4. experience with
services at Tufts-NEMC
Volunteer/ Stipend opportunities:
- Questionnaire reviewer/ tester:
Volunteers are needed to review the draft questionnaire to
give input and comments.
Volunteers will fill out
the draft questionnaire to test time needed and make suggestions for revision. Your input is important. Please be generous to give 30 minutes to one-hour of your time for
this.
- Office

Entering Clinical Trial - Is it right for you?
In addition to voice dubbing,
we would like community input on linguistic and culutral appropriateness on the DVD content. DVD screening
is available duing drop-in hours on June 16 & 23 from 9:30am to 12:00pm. The length of the DVD is 20 minutes.
Volunteer/ Stipend opportunities:
- Script writer/ reviewer:
The English script has been transcribed and will be translated into
Chinese. Volunteers are needed to review the script to give input and comments.
- Voice over talents:
If you had experience in vocie over projects before, please send your resume and/or
a demo sample of your previous work to the project consultant, Betty Yau to byau@tufts-nemc.org. Professional talents will be compensated with stipend.
If you have no previous experience but are very interested in being involved, please
also write to the program coordiantor. Training and guidance
will be provided to selected individuals.
