I believe the comparison of voting numbers below is significant not only for the numerical increase but also because of what it may represent. Numbers for other areas in Mission Hill or the South End are more difficult to interpret since the Chinese vote is a small percentage still. 
 
Primary elections were previously overlooked by voters, who mistakenly believe that they are less important than the final election. Many races get decided in the primaries, and it appears that Chinese American voters are becoming more aware of both political issues and strategies. 
 
In this year's primary, turnout was significantly higher than in past years. Unfortunately, I don't have 2002 primary turnout figures available.
